As another commenter said, I too have always had a vague discomfort with the pressure and push to critical thinking and criticism, as a discipline, in general, from my own college (high school?) days until now.Anastasiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17085771749046398091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7512869338404805014.post-8517850435612867252014-02-23T21:08:56.236-08:002014-02-23T21:08:56.236-08:00Willa, thank you! I guess I always figured that when taught both, the seeds of The Word would settle and take root, no matter what. But I do now see that seeds of The World (critical thinking) do the same and try to choke out the Good Seed.

Thank you for this perspective. I've done that myself, being convinced we have to always weigh one thing against another.

Good food for thought, and I thank you for that.melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07239376501783744106noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7512869338404805014.post-74362366910632390012014-02-23T08:54:55.412-08:002014-02-23T08:54:55.412-08:00I haven't read John Senior's book recently...I haven't read John Senior's book recently either but it does sound like something he would have said. It is in the principle of this thought of his:
“The restoration of reason presupposes that of love”.

Your paraphrase reminded me of this quote from CS Lewis about how reading should properly first be receptive:

"I am very doubtful whether criticism is a proper exercise for boys and girls.... The necessary condition of all good reading is 'to get ourselves out of the way'; we do not help the young to do this by forcing them to keep on expressing opinions."Willahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17374272000644968446noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7512869338404805014.post-72114318722266530792014-02-23T08:28:05.170-08:002014-02-23T08:28:05.170-08:00I tend to agree with you and I wish that I had rea...I tend to agree with you and I wish that I had read that book before I taught the critical thinking because I do see how my youngest sons are more skeptical than my older ones. My son's junior year told me that he wanted me to teach him Bible without using any commentary other than the Bible. Because as he said, he wondered if it was true. I was hard pressed as it stretched me in ways to answer his skeptical questions. He came away from it a believer but for a year it was very testing.
Still even though my other kids went through times of doubt reading what you use here makes me wonder if that was why because of the critical thinking. Always thought provoking to read you.Farm Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00998621464797636686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7512869338404805014.post-20862012825398037472014-02-23T07:48:47.775-08:002014-02-23T07:48:47.775-08:00Amen.
